Pros and cons of World Factbook 2011 app for iPhone and iPad

World Factbook 2011 app good for

Great idea for an app, especially for the iPod Touch. Ive been waiting for something like this. The data is fantastic, however, the maps are far from decent. Zoomable, detailed maps would make this app the perfect pocket atlas.
Love the Snippets .... great Geography/History/Demographics/Economics Review. I agree that this should have Zoomable more detailed maps as well as a section on the Aggregate Data for the world including listing the Longest Rivers, Tallest Mountains, etc. as well as an index of all the countries and their Capitals. One day, perhaps, the data can even be mined to filter the content to answer queries. Overall, very useful and elegant app.

Some bad moments

I was hoping I would get the capitals of each country and states in a section... this is not the case :(
I was a bit hesitant at first given the price but I decided to give it a try and its really nice! The layout is excellent/attractive and the information is well presented, accurate & up to date. Very cool app.
Nicely laid out, great to-go information. What I would like to see in an update. Non-distorted maps (Switzerland for instance); tilt enabled; additional map of country within the world map for reference, not just a close up of the selected country; maybe even an option to hear the national anthem for each country. Im sure there is more that people want to see, but thats my first initial impression. Well done!
Wow!, this takes my 2005 $30+ soft cover World Desk Reference and puts it into my handy iPhone 3G, updated for 2008, for just $5. SUPER!!
Yes I know this is the online CIA Book, but I really like having this as an offline resource! I want wiki offline next!
With the lack of an alphabet index (like in Contacts) you have to flick through a dozen or more screens to find the country you are interested in. Countries are mostly in alphabetical order, but not entirely...for example Taiwan is second from the last and the EU is at the very end of the list, which is inexplicable. Maps are distorted, the aspect ratio was not preserved. So the map of the United States has the US being taller than it is wide. You can slide maps from side-to-side but cannot zoom...and the print on many of the maps is a couple of pixels high and cannot be read. (Such as the US Map.) The text is in a serif font, and there is extensive use of italics, so reading can be a bit of a challenge...although it isnt impossible., The application exceeds the 10 Megabyte limit for 3G/Edge downloading, so you MUST download through iTunes. This is generally useful to have as a reference. But it seems like it is a swift and hasty implementation.
